Roy Throws Late TD Pass, Lifts FCS-Member Illinois State Past Northern Illinois 28-24
Illinois State’s defense says the FCS run gave it five extra games and a tougher test against an FBS opponent.
On Saturday night, FCS-member Illinois State defeated Northern Illinois 28-24 after quarterback Gage Roy threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Alex Herrera with 1:53 remaining.
The victory keeps the undefeated Redbirds at 3-0, while the loss drops the Huskies to an 0-2 record early in the season.
Redbirds quarterback Roy completed 20 of 23 passes for 146 yards, executing an 11-play, 75-yard drive that chewed 5:31 off the clock.
With 20 seconds left, Doreon Dubose intercepted Northern Illinois quarterback Taron Dickens to seal the win, despite Telly Johnson Jr. previously scoring on a 1-yard run for the Huskies.
Ranked No. 5, the Redbirds maintain momentum in their undefeated season, while the Huskies face mounting pressure following the narrow home loss.
