Exit Polls Suggest that Yotova Wins Runoff to Become Bulgaria’s First Elected Female President
Exit polls put her above 50% as low turnout and Black Sea security fears shaped a runoff dominated by the war in Ukraine.
Exit polls suggest Acting President Iliana Yotova is winning Bulgaria's presidential runoff with about 52% of the vote, while challenger Andrey Gyurov trails with around 44%. If confirmed by official results expected Monday, she would become Bulgaria's first elected female head of state.
After Rumen Radev resigned earlier this year to lead his party, Yotova automatically became acting president. The runoff follows the October 25 vote, which drew record-low turnout of only 23% of eligible voters according to election officials.
During a recent debate, Yotova advocated for a negotiated settlement involving Ukraine and Russia to end the war. Gyurov criticized the government for being reluctant to name Russia as the aggressor, emphasizing his commitment to a reliable NATO ally.
Voting occurred amidst growing economic hardship and increased drone attacks on Black Sea shipping that have left several sailors dead or missing. These security pressures underscore the urgency voters felt regarding the candidates' contrasting diplomatic strategies.
Gyurov, backed by pro-Western opposition parties, warned against diplomatic isolation, stating, 'When you have no position and are not at the table, you are in fact on the menu.' The rhetoric underscores his push for a more assertive foreign policy.
EXIT polls have shown Bulgaria's acting president Iliana Jotova leading in the second round of the presidential election, on course to become the first woman elected to the largely ceremonial post.
She sees herself as the "President of Peace": Bulgaria's incumbent Jotova is in the lead in the run-off election, according to forecasts. The russian-friendly politician prevailed against challenger Gjurov.
In the first round of the election, head of state Jotova had a narrow lead. Now she was able to assert herself clearly against her challenger Andrei Gjurow.
