Prince George RCMP Cleared of Criminal Wrongdoing in 2025 Man's Death
The watchdog found no reasonable grounds to charge officers and said delayed notification cost investigators key evidence.
On Friday, the Independent Investigations Office released a report clearing Prince George RCMP of wrongdoing in a man's August 2025 death, with chief civilian director Jessica Berglund finding no reasonable grounds to believe officers committed an offence.
During the August 24, 2025, incident, officers encountered a man in crisis who barricaded himself inside a bedroom, attempting to reason with him before forcing entry to provide medical aid.
Berglund stated police were not negligent, noting that entering the dark room to confront an armed individual involved significant risks, while an autopsy confirmed the man died from mixed drug toxicity.
The IIO criticized the RCMP for failing to notify the watchdog until September 22, 2025, nearly a month after the incident, causing material evidence to be lost.
A pathologist reported that about 10 per cent of people suffering cardiac events outside hospitals survive to be discharged, though the effect of earlier medical access remains uncertain.
