ISP Identifies Off-Duty Trooper Who Intervened in Twin Falls In-N-Out Shooting

The trooper shot at the gunman and directed workers to safety as investigators reviewed the deadly attack that left three people dead.

  • On Tuesday, the Idaho State Police identified Specialist Steve McClain, a 12-year Twin Falls native veteran, as the off-duty trooper who confronted the gunman at the In-N-Out Burger on August 1. His identity had been withheld while investigators completed their initial review.
  • During the August 1 attack at the Twin Falls restaurant, 24-year-old Chad Williams opened fire through the drive-thru window, killing three people and wounding seven before dying by suicide. Investigators have not yet determined a motive.
  • Video released Friday shows McClain in a white T-shirt vaulting over the counter and drawing his sidearm while 35-year-old Jordan Salinas of Kimberly, Idaho also engaged the shooter. Their combined actions forced Williams away from the dining area, preventing further casualties.
  • Idaho State Police Col. Bill Gardiner praised McClain's "decision to confront the threat in an effort to protect others," stating "Years of training, experience, discipline and commitment were compressed into a matter of seconds." Gardiner added he "undoubtedly helped save lives."
  • In a statement, McClain expressed gratitude for his training, stating "I am thankful for the training I have received throughout my career that prepared me for this horrific incident." ISP extended deepest condolences to victims' families and requested privacy as investigation continues.
