Idaho renews and expands shared stewardship agreement to increase management of Idaho forests
The 2025 Shared Stewardship agreement aims to double timber sales to 100 million board feet annually and reduce wildfire risk through coordinated forest treatments, officials said.
- On Thursday, Idaho renewed its Shared Stewardship Agreement with the U.S. Forest Service under an updated 2025 plan to improve forest health and reduce wildfire risk by expanding timber sales on National Forest lands.
- Idaho Department of Lands Director Dustin Miller said this year's renewal responds to population pressures as more homes enter forested areas and more than 6.5 million acres face high wildfire threats, endangering rural communities, water supplies, and federal land.
- Using the Good Neighbor Authority model, Idaho builds on 19 active Good Neighbor Authority agreements, with the Forest Service providing about $4 million upfront and officials projecting a 25% timber sales increase.
- Officials say timber revenue will fund fish and wildlife habitat restoration, tree replanting and recreation improvements, and increasing timber output will support rural economies while protecting communities at risk.
- The Forest Service cut around 3,400 positions, and Grassroots Wildland Firefighters found a nearly 40% drop in fuel-reduction projects, while Democratic U.S. Senators questioned Chief Tom Schultz's efforts.
