ICBC red tape delays suspicious car fire cleanup in B.C. provincial park
ICBC approved the tow after days of delay as officials assessed cleanup costs and environmental risks from the suspected stolen vehicle.
- On Monday, June 1, ICBC authorized removal of a burned vehicle from Goldstream Provincial Park, ending a days-long standoff over cleanup liability. An environmental consultant has been retained to assess residual impacts.
- Westshore Towing owner Dave LeQuesne refused earlier removal, citing fears that environmental cleanup costs could reach hundreds of thousands of dollars, as the car was located on First Nations land, roughly 10 to 15 feet from a river.
- The Ministry of Environment and Parks stated the "small Honda Civic-type car" fuel was "largely consumed during the fire," and Langford Fire discovered the wreckage following a "suspicious fire" early Friday, May 29.
- Removal is scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, with First Nations representatives in attendance, while West Shore RCMP continues investigating the incident as a "suspicious fire."
- LeQuesne suggested implementing a 24-hour emergency contact line for tow operators and a contingency fund to cover removals, noting such delays are not uncommon for similar incidents.
