Liberal Faction Accused of Seeking Funds to Turf Out MP
Witnesses are being questioned over claims that factional figures sought $50,000 to fund a branch operation and unseat Alex Hawke.
On Tuesday, Damien Tudehope appeared before the Independent Commission Against Corruption, testifying that membership recruitment is crucial for Liberal MPs' political survival and praising Jean-Claude Perrottet's talent for signing up members.
Businessman Frits Mare testified that Perrottet and Christian Ellis requested $50,000 to fund a call centre operation aimed at unseating federal MP Alex Hawke from his seat in Mitchell.
Robert Assaf admitted meeting Jeremy Greenwood at a Belfield cafe to "align" evidence before key Reformers testified, while the inquiry examined claims Assaf received $135,000 for factional work, which he denied.
Associates labeled Assaf a "rat" for cooperating with authorities, with Reformers directing "jokes and insinuations" at him, including Toplace lawyer Sharangan Maheswaran who mocked his honesty.
Tudehope, who described a "love-hate relationship with the Liberal Party" since joining in the 1970s, has stood down from Liberal Leader Kellie Sloane's frontbench pending the ongoing inquiry.
