10-Year-Old Recalls Teacher Who Died Saving Her From Myrtle Beach Rip Current
Derrick Moore, a Georgia teacher, rescued the girl before the current pulled him under, and he later died, police said.
- On August 7, Derrick Moore, a teacher at Rockbridge Elementary School in Georgia, died after rescuing a 10-year-old girl from a rip current near 10th Avenue South in Myrtle Beach. The incident occurred after lifeguards had gone off duty.
- Summer McCallum struggled as the strong current pulled her under repeatedly; her uncle, Ernest McCallum, entered the water first before Moore swam to assist and bring Summer safely to shore.
- "I saw him coming, and he was like, 'Grab my arm,' and I grabbed it, but like he was also struggling once he got to me," Summer said. Moore's body washed ashore the next morning.
- The DeKalb County School District said Moore "cared deeply for his students" and made a lasting impact on families and communities he served. Moore leaves behind four children, his family said.
- "Because of Derrick, I don't have to know what it feels like to lose a child," said Kamille Raines, Summer's mother, through tears. The community continues expressing gratitude for Moore's heroism.
