USS Abraham Lincoln Returns to US After Record Deployment
More than 50 babies will greet returning crew members as the carrier ends a prolonged deployment marked by extensions, shortages and strained morale, officials said.
On Thursday, the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group returned to its Southern California homeport after a 10-month deployment to the Persian Gulf, traveling more than 85,000 nautical miles.
What began as a Pacific deployment shifted to a prolonged stay in the Middle East, where the carrier spent 321 days on deployment and set a record for 265 consecutive days at sea without a port visit.
Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao acknowledged suicide attempts among strike team members during the deployment, while Commanding Officer Daniel stated conditions remained "in the normal spectrum of what you might expect."
On Wednesday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth presented the crew with the Presidential Unit Citation, describing the deployment as "one of the most operationally intense and consequential of the modern era."
More than 50 babies were waiting to meet their parents for the first time, while San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria demanded leaders "keep our city out of your reckless war talk.
