'I feel like it's my fault': Musician recounts carjacking that ended in a deadly shooting
The stolen car held his guitar and work tools, and the musician says the loss has disrupted his livelihood, a friend said.
- Alexander Opdyke, a Sacramento musician, offered a ride to a man carrying a gas can outside a Safeway in Citrus Heights, but the stranger carjacked him at gunpoint, claiming he was wanted for "25 to life."
- Attempting to connect to Wi-Fi at the Safeway on Greenback Lane due to phone service issues, Opdyke struck up a conversation with the man and offered him a ride to the gas station out of what he called "naive optimism."
- After firing a shot into the air, the suspect fled with a woman in Opdyke's 2008 Ford Taurus SEL, which contained his musical equipment, including his favorite guitar, and work tools now held as evidence.
- Sacramento County Sheriff deputies engaged the suspect in a chase ending on southbound Interstate 5 near Arena Boulevard, where investigators said the man pointed a gun at officers, who then shot and killed him.
- Opdyke's livelihood was disrupted, with his vehicle damaged and held as evidence, though a friend created a GoFundMe to help. Despite the trauma, Opdyke said he is trying not to lose his sense of compassion.
