Ohio Republicans Introduce Bill to Rename Part of I-70 After President Trump
House Bill 638 would rename a two-mile stretch of I-70 in Columbus after Trump, with signs to be installed by Ohio Department of Transportation.
- On Dec. 30, 2025, House Bill 638 would rename a section of Interstate 70 through downtown Columbus as the President Donald Trump Freedom Highway, introduced by Representative D.J. Swearingen, District 89, and Representative Jeff LaRe, District 73.
- Ohio Republicans have previously pushed multiple measures to recognize President Trump, including efforts to declare June 14 President Donald J. Trump Day and rename Mosquito Lake State Park, but these attempts did not gain traction.
- The proposal would apply to about two miles through central Columbus between mile marker 98 and mile marker 100, eastbound and westbound lanes, and require the Ohio Department of Transportation to erect markers.
- Sponsors filed House Bill 638 on Dec. 23 and say it will head to a House committee next, with Rep. D.J. Swearingen stating, `We wanted to honor the president's efforts...` if enacted, signs could show the new name.
- Politically, the proposal matters because President Donald Trump won Ohio by 11 points in 2024 but lost Franklin County, Ohio, and past measures did not gain traction in the Ohio legislature.
