Hyundai CRATER Concept Makes Global Debut at AutoMobility LA 2025
The Crater concept highlights Hyundai's next step in rugged electric SUVs with off-road features and design elements aimed at U.S. buyers, amid a 29% sales increase.
- On Thursday, Hyundai Motor unveiled the Crater concept at the LA Auto Show, marking its global debut; Hyundai said it's a "next evolution of Hyundai's rugged XRT design with even more toughness and capability to reflect U.S. customer desires."
- Hyundai's strong sales have driven domestic growth up 29% to more than 1.7 million vehicles, prompting concept cars to gauge interest and signal the XRT sub-brand's off-road direction.
- The Crater packs skid plates, lockers and 33-inch all-terrain tires, inside are four small detachable displays and four Camp Modes with HUD animations, Hyundai said.
- For now, the company calls the Crater a design exploration and declined to discuss production plans, while observers say it signals Hyundai is moving toward more capable off-road EVs.
- The design nods to Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco and GMC Hummer, while analysts say Hyundai must push further to match volumes and margins in America's wilderness.
