Gunman in Brown University Shooting Found Dead, Linked to MIT Killing
Claudio Neves-Valente, a former Brown physics student, killed two students and an MIT professor, injuring nine others, before taking his own life, police said.
- On Saturday, authorities identified Claudio Manuel Neves-Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national, as the suspect in a shooting at Brown University's Barus & Holley engineering and physics building that killed two students and wounded nine.
- Records show Valente enrolled in Brown's graduate physics program starting Sept. 1, 2000, took a leave in April 2001, withdrew July 31, 2003, and attended classes in the Barus & Holley building.
- Tracing a rental car revealed Providence police used rental agency surveillance footage and Flock Safety's network of more than 70 cameras to identify Valente after a Brown custodian's tip.
- Authorities confirmed the suspect's connection to MIT professor Nuno Loureiro, who was shot in his Brookline home, and they linked Valente to the same academic programme in Portugal.
- At the president's direction, USCIS will pause the diversity visa lottery programme, which officials said Valente entered in 2017 and was issued a green card, with up to 50,000 visas annually.
