How Canada’s New Pact with the European Union Might Affect You
The pact would widen student exchanges, speed research access and expand digital trade, while Canada and the EU also deepen security and defence cooperation.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen concluded the EU-Canada summit on Friday in Montreal, signing agreements on digital trade, research, and security.
As Washington reduces support for Ukraine's defence, Canada is increasing its contribution to the conflict. Carney announced Friday the country will join an EU loan program for Ukraine with an initial pledge of roughly C$775 million.
Carney said a new pact will give Canadian researchers access to European supercomputers, potentially cutting processing times from six months to one day. Both jurisdictions are exploring expanded market access for banks, insurers, and fintech companies.
Montreal-Based firm Galvion will produce helmets for soldiers in Latvia under a contract worth up to $43 million, marking the first project under Canada's partnership with the EU's defence procurement program, SAFE.
Both jurisdictions agreed to launch discussion groups on the Arctic and climate security. Von der Leyen said European industrial demand, technology and investment can help develop Canadian mineral projects.
