Housing is now unaffordable for a record half of all US renters, study finds

A new Harvard University report reveals that in 2022, a record half of U.S. Renters paid more than 30% of their income for rent and utilities, with nearly half of them paying over 50%.
Even households making $30,000 to $74,999 a year faced increased unaffordability, and a third of full-time working renters were burdened by housing costs.
The rental market is softening, but compromises such as living in less desirable neighborhoods or longer commutes no longer guarantee cheaper rent.
