US House Passes Bill Allowing Year-Round Sales of E15 Gasoline
The bill also revises federal fuel policy, and supporters said it would help corn growers and keep gasoline prices lower.
On Wednesday, the U.S. House passed the Nationwide Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act in a 218-203 vote, codifying year-round sales of gasoline blended with 15% ethanol, known as E15.
Republican leadership decoupled the measure from the Farm Bill after negotiations collapsed on the House floor, responding to rural Republicans who demanded a stand-alone vote on the ethanol blend.
The bill split the House GOP, with 122 Republicans and 95 Democrats voting in favor, while Rep. Josh Brecheen opposed it, arguing the legislation 'cripples' small refineries.
Advocates celebrated the passage as a major win for rural communities, with Rep. Zach Nunn stating the measure will save Americans money at the pump while supporting farmers.
The legislation now heads to the U.S. Senate, where prospects remain uncertain, as the Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill would increase the federal deficit by about $2.3 billion over 10 years.
