Hornets Select Hannes Steinbach 14th Overall in 2026 NBA Draft
On Tuesday, the Charlotte Hornets selected University of Washington center Hannes Steinbach 14th overall in the 2026 NBA Draft held in Brooklyn, New York.
A native of Würzburg, Germany, Steinbach follows in the footsteps of NBA headliner Dirk Nowitzki, a close family friend who played alongside Steinbach's father, Burkhard, in the German League.
Averaging 18.5 points and 11.8 rebounds, Steinbach led Division I with 22 double-double performances, becoming the Huskies' first first-round pick in six seasons.
"Seeing Dirk succeeding in the NBA at that level gave me a level of confidence I could make it, as well," Steinbach told Hornets beat writers.
Steinbach joins Washington alumni Eldridge Recasner, Spencer Hawes, and Isaiah Thomas as Hornets draft picks, positioning him within a franchise history of Huskies success.
An ex-Würzburger in the NBA? That's what happened before. Hannes Steinbach can hope for his liga debut soon – together with fellow countryman Christian Anderson. A third German still has to fear.
