Hope veteran's death shines spotlight on little-known Legion service
The tribute included a full colour guard and the Last Post, and a special dive team later placed his ashes on HMCS Saskatchewan.
Charlene Pacholuk arranged a military tribute for Korean War veteran Earnest Ager after contacting Ian Williams, former president of Hope Legion, to honor her longtime friend.
Because Ager's original ship, HMCS Souix, was dismantled more than 50 years ago, he lacked a final resting place; Williams offered to place Ager's ashes on his own vessel, HMCS Saskatchewan.
Pacholuk, who knew Ager for 40 years, called the tribute the 'perfect way' to honor him, with the ceremony featuring the Last Post and a color guard that included her own son.
Following his death in February, a special dive team added Ager's ashes to the HMCS Saskatchewan in September, finalizing the veteran's resting place and fulfilling Williams' promise.
Williams, who served as Hope Legion president for 11 years, hopes other families utilize these military tributes, noting this backyard service was his first of its kind.
