Holidaymaker's Passport Warning as Ryanair Refuse Flight over Easy to Miss Mistake
Rachael Norton-Voysey said a 1.5cm tear in her passport led Ryanair to deny boarding, forcing her and her friend to abandon their trip.
On Jun 4, Ryanair refused to board Rachael Norton-Voysey at Birmingham Airport for her flight to Lanzarote because of a small 1.5cm rip in her passport.
Norton-Voysey believes the damage occurred during a past holiday while using the passport for eight years without realizing the rip existed until her travel attempt.
A Ryanair spokesperson said the passenger was "correctly refused travel" because the passport was damaged, while Norton-Voysey described the decision as "petty," noting immigration staff called it "harsh."
After being escorted out, Norton-Voysey and her friend returned home together, choosing not to travel separately; they rearranged their AirBnB stay and plan to visit Lanzarote later.
Government guidance warns that "if your passport is damaged you must replace it," prompting Norton-Voysey to advise travelers to "check your passport well before you're going to travel.
