Hitless Through Seven Innings, Brewers Rally in Eighth to Beat Cardinals 2-1
On Wednesday, the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 after Garrett Mitchell's leadoff double in the eighth inning broke up Dustin May's no-hitter bid at American Family Field.
May dominated through seven scoreless innings, striking out nine without a walk on 87 pitches while limiting the Brewers to just two base runners before the eighth-inning breakthrough.
Christian Yelich singled to tie the game after Luis Rengifo reached on a bunt single, with Sal Frelick scoring on a Masyn Winn error for the go-ahead run. Aaron Ashby improved to 9-0 as the Brewers' bullpen combined for five scoreless innings.
The Brewers extended their winning streak to 15 wins in 19 games, maintaining the NL Central lead, while the Cardinals fell to seven losses in nine games after Bryan Torres' fourth-inning triple scored their only run.
May's near-miss joins a historic drought at American Family Field, where only Alec Mills and Carlos Zambrano have pitched no-hitters since 2001. The Brewers travel to Houston on Friday with RHP Coleman Crow starting.
