Original Hampden Park Stadium Site in Glasgow Given Protected Status
The designation follows a public consultation and protects the site from redevelopment, preserving a ground linked to football’s earliest international matches.
Historic Environment Scotland has designated the First Hampden site on Kingsley Avenue in Glasgow as a protected scheduled monument, recognizing it as the world's first purpose-built international football stadium.
Queen's Park FC utilized the grounds as their home, hosting Scotland's first international match in 1873 and a famous 5-1 victory against England in 1882. The site is described as the "belly button of world football."
Following the closure of Hampden Bowling Club earlier this year, campaigners pushed for protection against redevelopment into flats. A public consultation showed overwhelming support for the designation.
Dara Parsons, head of designations at HES, described the remains as "a link to the earliest days of football in Scotland" and "a monument to our national game." The designation preserves the site in its historical form.
More than 8000 scheduled monuments exist across Scotland, and HES plans to continue engagement this summer by asking the public to suggest other important football heritage sites for investigation.
