In 1962, Brian Jones Asked Charlie Watts to Join The Rolling Stones in a Letter. Now It Is Expected to Fetch $80,000 at Auction
The handwritten note, valued at up to $80,000, shows Brian Jones courting Charlie Watts before the Rolling Stones had settled on their classic lineup.
A handwritten letter from Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones to Charlie Watts, inviting the drummer to join the band in 1962, is heading to the auction block. The historic document offers a rare glimpse into the legendary group's formation.
In the June 1962 letter, Jones urged Watts to leave Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated and join his band, boasting his group was "far better." Jones added their current drummer was "atrocious."
Kept in the Watts family for more than 60 years, the letter reveals the drummer did not officially join the Stones until January 1963. His delayed acceptance underscores his initial hesitation about leaving his existing commitments.
Sotheby's New York will display the letter from December 2 to 8, with the item expected to fetch between $70,000 and $80,000. Online bidding closes December 15 ahead of the final sale.
The Stones have achieved eight UK number one singles in their career and recently released the album Foreign Tongues. The letter captures the ambition of a band that defined rock history for nearly six decades.
