Hinojosa vows to protect Texas citizens from data centers
- On Thursday, Texas Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa announced plans to introduce legislation protecting residents from data centers, pledging to pause new projects until regulations ensure communities have "a seat at the table."
- Before Hinojosa's election victory, Greg Abbott became one of the first Republican governors to halt new data center connections to the electric grid, ordering a comprehensive audit amid increasing public opposition.
- During a Thursday news conference in Austin, Hinojosa said she contacted the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission executive director "to request that no action be taken" regarding the potential Boca Chica State Park sale to SpaceX.
- Billionaire Elon Musk, whose Tesla and SpaceX firms are headquartered in the Lone Star State, supported Abbott in the election and spent $158 million to promote Texas Republican US Senate candidate Ken Paxton.
- Future policy decisions will occur on Hinojosa's terms, though she acknowledged the state can maintain a working relationship with Musk's companies, emphasizing that all future operations must prioritize state protections.
