Hillary Clinton Calls Biden's 2024 Reelection Bid a 'Terrible Mistake'
Clinton said Biden’s late exit left Democrats with only months to build a campaign and argued a competitive primary could have beaten Trump.
Hillary Clinton called President Joe Biden's decision to seek reelection a "terrible mistake" on Monday during an interview with New Yorker editor David Remnick, arguing he should have passed the torch to the next generation of Democratic leadership.
Biden previously pledged to serve as a bridge to the next generation, but decided to run anyway. Clinton argued he should have announced his departure in the late summer of '23 to allow a competitive primary.
Clinton argued any nominee from a contested primary would have defeated Donald Trump. "And very sadly I believe whoever emerged from that contest, whether it was the vice president, or a governor, or a senator, or anybody else, would've beaten Donald Trump," she said.
President Joe Biden eventually withdrew from the race amid concerns about his age and fitness, allowing Vice President Kamala Harris to become the Democratic nominee without an open primary. House Democrats had previously called for his withdrawal.
The Democratic National Committee's autopsy report released in May did not address President Joe Biden's decision to seek a second term, though it noted the administration did not "position or prepare the vice president" for a successful campaign.
