Hikers stumble across treasure hidden on a mountain trail
- Two hikers found a valuable stash of 598 gold coins, 10 gold bracelets, and other items in an aluminum box in the Krkonose Mountains, northeastern Czech Republic.
- The find likely relates to the turbulent period around 1945, when Germans were leaving and populations shifted in this borderland territory between the Czech Republic and Poland.
- The collection includes 3.7 kilograms of gold coins evenly split between Balkan and French origins, with no coins from local Central European regions, alongside several personal items such as a dozen cigar cases, a powder compact, and a comb.
- Miroslav Novak, head of archaeology at the Museum of Eastern Bohemia, said the gold's metal value is about 8 million Czech koruna , and two cigar cases remain unopened.
- The discovery has sparked local interest and rumors, and legal ownership belongs to regional authorities while finders may receive a reward based on the appraisal, with historical analysis ongoing.
