Ontario Looks to Ease Highway 400 Congestion with Major Expansion. What Commuters Can Expect
AECOM will design the 11-kilometre project, which adds four lanes and expands Highway 400 from six to 10 lanes.
On Monday, Oct. 5, 2026, the Ontario government awarded a detailed design contract to AECOM to widen Highway 400 from six to 10 lanes between Highway 9 and the future Bradford Bypass.
This 11-kilometre expansion is part of the province's $31 billion infrastructure plan aimed at addressing gridlock and keeping goods moving along this critical route between northern and southern Ontario.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria stated the project helps "keep our economy moving," while York-Simcoe MPP Susan Lahey noted the widening will "reduce commute times" and support continued regional growth.
The Vaughan Chamber of Commerce welcomed the investment, with vice-president Abdus Samad stating it is crucial to "support business growth and keep Ontario competitive" given current highway congestion.
Early work begins next year to link this project with other regional developments, Sarkaria said, including the Bradford Bypass and ongoing bridge construction in Barrie.
