High winds from Subtropical Storm Josephine nix N.S.-P.E.I. ferry crossings
Environment Canada recorded a 122 km/h gust on Sable Island as gale warnings kept all Northumberland Ferries crossings on hold.
Northumberland Ferries cancelled all morning crossings on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, citing high winds generated by the remnants of Subtropical Storm Josephine.
Satellite imagery from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows Subtropical Storm Josephine pushing away from the Northeast coast as of Thursday, Oct. 22, 2026.
Environment Canada recorded northeast gusts reaching 122 kilometres per hour on Sable Island, located about 300 kilometres southeast of Halifax, at 7 a.m. today.
Northumberland Ferries will provide an update on afternoon sailings no later than 1 p.m., while gale warnings remain in effect for the eastern Northumberland Strait.
Current northerly winds are gusting at 65 kilometres per hour, though Environment Canada expects conditions to diminish to 45 kilometres per hour by midnight.
