The 33-year-old victim sustained seven stab wounds during the struggle, with officials reporting a 6% increase in felony assaults within this precinct so far this year.
- On Friday, off-duty Detective Jose Mercedes was stabbed seven times during an attempted robbery in the Bronx while retrieving items from his Mustang on E. 208th St. in Norwood around 2 p.m.
- Two men on an e-bike attempted to snatch Mercedes's gold chain, then fled on the bike; the detective chased them two blocks to Rochambeau Ave. near E. 206th St., where he collapsed.
- Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and Mayor Mamdani visited the detective at Jacobi Hospital, where medics treated his neck and torso wounds. He was released Monday as NYPD officers cheered his departure.
- "Every rank is here today to support him leaving, because he's a real hero," said Scott Munro, president of the Detectives' Endowment Association. Suspects remain at large, police sources said.
- Statistics current as of Sunday show felony assaults in the 52nd Precinct are up 6% this year with 739 incidents, while robberies in the precinct fell 3% and citywide robberies dropped 12%.
