Helldivers 2 Dev Worked With Sony Studio Nixxes to Create a 'Slim' Version for PC That Reduces File Size From 154GB to 23GB

The new slim Helldivers 2 PC beta cuts install size by 131GB, or 85%, aiming to reduce storage demands after player complaints about the original 154GB size.

  • On Tuesday, Arrowhead rolled out a public technical beta on Steam offering a slim PC build for Helldivers 2, cutting installation size from 154GB to 23GB, saving 131GB .
  • Because developers duplicated assets to speed HDD loads, Arrowhead found level-generation drives most loading time and worked with Nixxes to slim the PC install toward console versions.
  • Testing shows mission loading increases were only a few seconds in worst cases for about 11% of Helldivers 2 players using mechanical HDDs, despite developers warning of up to a 10x increase.
  • The slim version arrives with the 5.0.0 patch and Python Commandos Warbond, freeing up space for at least one or two large games, and will become default if the beta is clean.
  • Assuming all goes smoothly, the legacy version will be discontinued next year; Arrowhead said the slim beta helps players with limited PC storage and reached its size goal sooner than expected.
