Helena man killed while walking on highway near Kalispell
The Montana Highway Patrol said the pedestrian was in a shoulderless lane when a westbound pickup struck him just before 3 a.m.
A 28-year-old Helena man died early Saturday after being struck by a pickup truck on U.S. Highway 2 near Kalispell, Montana Highway Patrol reported, with the collision occurring at approximately 2:53 a.m. near mile marker 117 in Flathead County.
The 18-year-old driver from Eureka was traveling westbound when she activated her high beams, illuminating the pedestrian in the roadway; investigators noted the highway section lacks shoulders and the man wore dark clothing, making him difficult to see.
After the Ford F-150 struck the pedestrian on the front driver's side bumper, he rolled into oncoming traffic and was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver and three passengers awaited emergency responders.
All four occupants of the truck wore seat belts and avoided injury, though the driver was transported to a Kalispell hospital for evaluation; Montana Highway Patrol confirmed drugs, alcohol, and speed were not factors.
Officials have not released the identity of the deceased man as the crash remains under active investigation by the Montana Highway Patrol, which continues to examine circumstances of the early Saturday collision.
