Oregon Man Who Stopped Bend Elementary School Shooter Called to Tell His Mother: 'I Shot and Killed Him, Mom'
Police said the shooter targeted a special-needs class, and the bystander who killed him is now struggling after the attack.
On Oct. 15, 2026, Kaylub Giamanco confronted and fatally shot a 16-year-old gunman at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, halting an attack that killed three children and a teacher.
A 36-year-old father of two, Giamanco witnessed the teenager enter the school during his lunch break while targeting a special needs classroom.
According to his mother, Kenda Freeman, Giamanco "knew something was not right," so he grabbed his firearm and "army crawled" through a window the shooter had shattered.
Three children and a teacher died in the attack, leaving Giamanco traumatized as he told his mother, "Mom, I couldn't save them all."
Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek and community members praised Giamanco's actions, but Freeman noted the family is prioritizing healing over broader political debates.
