Hazen football season still on despite reports of cancellation
The district said Hazen will continue league play after one forfeit, and athletic director Jesse Snyder said no decision has been made to cancel the season.
The Renton School District confirmed Hazen High School will continue its football season, refuting online reports claiming the program had been canceled. Renton School District Athletic Director Jesse Snyder stated the team intends to play its remaining schedule despite a recent forfeit.
Confusion arose following a post on Mason Kelley's Spilled Ink Substack reporting the season's cancellation after Hazen forfeited its homecoming game against Bellevue. Kelley noted he lacked specific details regarding the team's situation.
Snyder attributed the single game forfeit to a lack of available players caused by injuries, attrition, and academic suspensions. First-year head coach Marcus Carr has faced significant challenges since replacing Chris Bennett.
With the Bellevue game recorded as a forfeit, The Highlanders will face Issaquah on Oct. 9 as they attempt to continue their KingCo league season.
The Highlanders currently hold an 0-4 record this season while competing in the KingCo crown division. They lead the league in points allowed per game with 45.8, reflecting the challenges faced on the field.
