Gutierres Converts Late Penalty to Give Boston Legacy a 2-1 Win over Orlando Pride
Gutierres’ 15th career penalty goal lifted the Legacy to their second straight home win after Orlando led early.
On Tuesday, Amanda Gutierres scored a 98th-minute penalty to lead Boston Legacy FC to a 2-1 victory over Orlando Pride at Gillette Stadium in front of 8,182 fans.
Orlando took an early 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Brazilian superstar Marta converted a penalty kick, but Aleigh Gambone equalized for Boston in the 72nd minute with a volley from inside the 18-yard box.
Officials awarded the decisive penalty after a VAR check confirmed a handball in the box, allowing Gutierres to register her first NWSL goal in her inaugural season with the club.
The victory moves Boston out of last place in the NWSL standings for the first time this season, improving to a 2-5-3 record and extending their unbeaten streak to four games.
Boston travels to face Bay FC on Friday at 10 p.m. ET, with head coach Filipa Patão noting the need to "adapt" to different playing styles after deploying five substitutions Tuesday.
