The World’s Fourth Guggenheim Museum Finally Has an Opening Date
The museum will feature 30 galleries and rotating modern and contemporary works from West Asia, North Africa and South Asia.
- The Department of Culture and Tourism-Abu Dhabi announced today that the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open on Saadiyat Island on December 11. Designed by architect Frank Gehry, the project was first unveiled in 2006.
- Upon opening, the museum becomes the largest star in the Guggenheim's four-country constellation, joining locations in New York, Venice, and Bilbao. It sits within the Saadiyat Cultural District, alongside the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi.
- Featuring 30 galleries connected by a central atrium, the museum offers 11,600 square meters of interior space and 23,000 square meters outdoors. Its collection will rotate modern works representing West Asian, North African, and South Asian art from 1960 onward.
- "Defining moment in our cultural journey," said Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi. He noted the museum will create opportunities for learning and cultural exchange within the Saadiyat Cultural District.
- Regional cultural ambitions have faced challenges, as seen when Art Dubai was postponed following retaliatory Iranian strikes on US military outposts in the Gulf. The museum debuts amid this landscape, with Frieze Abu Dhabi launching in November 2026.
