GTA Catholic priest charged with sexual offences, removed from ministry: archdiocese

On Dec. 23, 2025 the Archdiocese of Toronto announced that James Cherickal, Catholic priest, was removed from pastoral ministry after being charged, The Canadian Press report by Sharif Hassan said.
Peel Regional Police said the charges were laid on Thursday, including one count of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference .
Cherickal was most recently attached to St. Jerome's Catholic Church in Brampton and served at other GTA parishes, including Mississauga and Scarborough, over three decades.
The archdiocese stressed both urgency and respect for due process, saying The Archdiocese of Toronto looks upon any accusation of misconduct as an urgent matter that requires serious attention and that James Cherickal is considered innocent until proven guilty.
Peel police confirmed Tuesday that the individual was arrested and charged and said, `As the matter is now before the courts, and to protect the integrity of the investigation, no further information can be provided at this time.
