Grizzly Bear Spotted on Northern Vancouver Island, Residents Urged to Be Cautious
Village urges residents to secure garbage, food and bird feeders after a grizzly and two cubs were spotted.
The Village of Sayward issued a safety advisory after a grizzly bear was spotted in the community on Monday, which sits between Campbell River and Port McNeill.
While grizzly bears are not typically found on Vancouver Island, this female bear is believed to have swum over from the mainland to reach the area.
Residents are asked to secure attractants like garbage, food, pet food, and bird feeders, and to keep a safe distance while staying alert at dawn and dusk.
The Village explicitly asks that people do not approach the animal under any circumstances to ensure the safety of both the bear and community members.
Similar sightings occurred during previous spring months, when a female grizzly and her two cubs were observed multiple times in the region, establishing a precedent for activity.
