Green MSP Q Manivannan loses bid to become St Andrews rector
Bernhoff won with 3,135 votes as turnout neared 45%, while Q Manivannan finished third after controversy over remarks on rape.
Arthur Bernhoff, a St Andrews graduate, was elected the university's new rector following a vote with turnout just under 45%, described by the university as the "biggest response to a rector's election in recent history."
Green Party MSP Q Manivannan lost the bid following controversy that flared last week when former rector John Cleese urged students to reject the politician, citing podcast comments critics claimed sought to "understate the appalling psychological effects of rape."
A total of 5425 votes were cast in the race; Bernhoff defeated actor Brian Baumgartner with 1553 votes for second place, while Manivannan finished third with 1243 votes and was eliminated in the third round.
Bernhoff, an analyst at the Ministry of Defence and Foreign Office deployable civilian expert, pledged to be "present, listening, and effective," intending to serve as a neutral advocate for the university's diverse student body.
Continuing their role at Holyrood, Manivannan, a queer Tamil immigrant who identifies as non-binary, recently secured a graduate visa lasting until 2029 and plans to apply for a global talent visa thereafter.
