The Greek economy relies heavily on tourism, which generates billions of euros each year, but the encroachment is widely considered to have become excessive. The Greek government has increased the number of beaches where fauna, flora and tranquillity will take precedence over tourist infrastructures to more than 250 on Friday 24 April. A decision to fight overtourism, in a country that welcomed in 2025 nearly 38 million visitors.
This year, 251 Greek beaches have been declared closed to any type of construction, from seats and shade rented to temporary wooden structures.
