Switzerland captain Xhaka gets probation in fake COVID-19 vaccination document case

  • On Thursday, Switzerland and Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka confirmed he received a two-year probation sentence after admitting to obtaining a fraudulent Covid-19 vaccination certificate. He also accepted a suspended fine of 150,000 Swiss francs .
  • Xhaka previously withdrew from the Switzerland squad to cooperate with public prosecutors in Lucerne investigating a local doctor. The 34-year-old midfielder acknowledged he made a "mistake" by obtaining the document due to "deep mistrust of the vaccine."
  • In his absence, Switzerland secured victories in all four Nations League matches. Swiss football president Peter Knabel said the decision for Xhaka to pull out was made jointly, noting the midfielder has played a record 152 games for his country.
  • Sunderland coach Bris stated the club believes the situation is now at a close, as Xhaka is expected to play for the Black Cats this Saturday when they face Brighton at the Stadium of Light.
  • Having already paid the procedural costs, Xhaka faces no additional action as things stand and is expected to return to the Switzerland squad in November. The penalty will not be enforced if he commits no further offenses during his probation.
