Govt increases petrol price by Rs5.58, HSD by Rs4.18 per litre for Sept 9
The Petroleum Division said petrol and diesel prices rose for a second straight day as Pakistan reviews fuel rates daily amid volatile global oil markets.
- The Petroleum Division increased petrol and HSD prices for Sept 9, marking the second consecutive day of domestic fuel hikes. Petrol now costs Rs364.35 per litre, while HSD reached Rs385.95.
- Global oil prices rose to a six-week high on Tuesday after Iran-backed Houthis attacked Saudi energy facilities. Pakistan relies on imports to satisfy most fuel requirements, making it vulnerable to international volatility.
- Petrol prices rose by Rs5.58 per litre, while HSD increased by Rs4.18 per litre. The government continues managing costs through its daily pricing mechanism implemented on July 17.
- According to the Pakistan Economic Survey, petroleum products constitute one of the country's largest import categories. Consequently, increases in international crude prices pressure foreign exchange reserves and contribute to inflation.
- Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade, noted that tanker flows through the Strait of Hormuz remain below normal. "Right now the risk premium is doing a lot of the heavy lifting," he said on price volatility.
