Gov. Rhoden Wins 4 More Years Leading SD
Rhoden’s victory extends nearly 50 years of Republican control after he topped Democrat Dan Ahlers with 64% of the vote when AP called the race.
On Tuesday, Republican Larry Rhoden won South Dakota's gubernatorial race, defeating Democrat Dan Ahlers with 64% of the vote and securing his first full term as governor.
Rhoden ascended to the position in 2025 after then-Gov Kristi Noem joined President Donald Trump's administration as Homeland Security secretary, leaving him to serve the remainder of her term.
During his tenure, Rhoden and Lieutenant Governor Tony Venhuizen signed bills including a $650 million penitentiary replacement and a law banning eminent domain usage for carbon capture pipelines.
Following his defeat Tuesday, Democrat Dan Ahlers conceded the race in Sioux Falls, extending the Democratic Party's long losing streak in a state where Republicans outnumber Democrats 2-to-1.
The state constitution specifies, "No person shall be elected to more than two consecutive terms as governor," but Rhoden could seek reelection in four years since his current term counts as his first elected term.
