The new laws require insurance companies to justify proposed rate increases and give the Illinois Department of Insurance the authority to challenge rates considered excessive, inadequate, or unfairly discriminatory. Insurers will also no longer be allowed to raise premiums on Illinois policyholders to cover losses from disasters in other states, including hurricanes and wildfires.
