Gophers pull away from St. Thomas in 76-62 win
Isaac Asuma scored 20 points as Minnesota built a 21-point lead and held off a late St. Thomas rally in the schools’ first Division I meeting.
On Friday, the Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated the St. Thomas Tommies 76-62 at The Barn, marking the first Division I meeting between the two Twin Cities basketball programs.
Despite only four miles separating the two schools, Minnesota had not played St. Thomas since 1934. Gophers head coach Niko Medved previously explored scheduling the Tommies last year.
Led by Isaac Asuma, Minnesota used a 23-4 run to control the first half. Asuma scored 20 points, and the Golden Gophers extended their lead to 21 points before the break.
The Tommies struggled from deep, making only two of 19 shots in the opening 20 minutes, but rallied in the second half to cut the deficit to seven points twice before Minnesota responded with a 9-0 run.
St. Thomas hosts Green Bay on Sunday before playing at Cincinnati on Monday. Minnesota, now 2-0, maintains a 99-6 record against Summit League teams.
