Google Turns Off Search And Gemini For K-12 Students By Default

The change follows criticism from lawmakers and districts, and Google says more than 150 million students worldwide use Classroom.

  • On Tuesday, Google announced that Gemini, NotebookLM, and Search will be turned off by default for K-12 student accounts, requiring schools to explicitly enable these tools if they wish to provide access to students.
  • Senators Richard Blumenthal and Josh Hawley questioned why AI features were made default on school devices last month, prompting the policy shift affecting more than 150 million students who use Google Classroom worldwide.
  • Because "Search and A.I. are deeply integrated," Chris Phillips, Google's vice president for education, explained that banning AI prevents students from accessing Google Search entirely, with affected students seeing an unavailability message.
  • New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani accused Google of using "monopoly power to force AI into our public schools," arguing that public education exists to serve students, not to grow "Big Tech" profit margins.
  • Los Angeles Unified School District and New York City Public Schools are reviewing the policy implications; NYCPS has already restricted AI on Chromebooks and requested Google disable AI Overview in search results for students.
