Harry Kane Becomes First Englishman in 25 Years to Win the Ballon d’Or
Kane’s 73-goal season and Bayern’s league-cup double made him the bookmakers’ favourite as voters weighed trophies against individual brilliance.
- On Monday, October 26, 2026, England and Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane won the 2026 Ballon d'Or at the London Palladium, becoming the first English recipient in 25 years.
- Kane secured the accolade after scoring 73 goals for club and country last season, a tally achieved only once before in a top European league by Lionel Messi.
- France Football's official website inadvertently published three articles naming Kane, Lamine Yamal, and Kylian Mbappé as winners hours before the ceremony, prompting a 30-minute delay.
- Shortly before Kane's victory, London City Lionesses midfielder Alexia Putellas claimed her third Ballon d'Or Feminin. Kane said on stage, "Wow, I'm almost speechless."
- Organizers hosted the 70th anniversary ceremony in London to honor inaugural 1956 winner Sir Stanley Matthews, symbolically positioning Kane's achievement within the trophy's historic legacy.
