GM Atkins believes Jays are improved after trade deadline
On Monday, General Manager Ross Atkins executed five trades, including dealing starter Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs and acquiring pitcher Jose Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels.
Following a disappointing 2026 season after last year's World Series run, Atkins aimed to dismantle the struggling roster while maintaining focus on competing for an American League wild-card spot.
Veterans George Springer, Max Scherzer, and Shane Bieber remained in Toronto despite expiring contracts; Springer wanted to stay, with Atkins saying, "It was important for him to be here. We wanted him here as we continue to push forward."
The team also traded reliever Jeff Hoffman to the Minnesota Twins and outfielder Daulton Varsho to the Houston Astros, while acquiring starter Jameson Taillon from the Cubs.
With the team 4 1/2 games out of a wild-card berth, Atkins expressed accountability for the season's struggles, focusing on competing this year and improving for 2027.
