Air Cargo Demand Rises 3.9% in July as North America Leads Global Growth
International air cargo demand grew as freighters gained market share and global trade rose 7.5%, IATA said.
- Global air cargo demand increased by 3.9% year-on-year in July 2026, according to the International Air Transport Association , with international demand rising 4.7% compared with July 2025.
- The operating environment remained supportive for cargo demand, with global trade increasing by 7.5% year-on-year and the Global Manufacturing Output Purchasing Managers Index staying in expansion territory.
- North American carriers recorded the strongest regional performance, with cargo demand rising 4.8%, while European airlines followed with 4.4% growth and increased capacity by 1.3%.
- Dedicated freighters gained market share as belly-hold traffic declined, IATA senior vice president Marie Owens Thomsen said, reflecting demand for larger or specialist shipments and operational flexibility.
- However, Owens Thomsen warned that "higher fuel prices, geopolitical tensions and tariff uncertainty will need to be watched carefully," though the outlook remains broadly positive.
