Glasgow Caledonian University Faces Disruption as All Four Unions Go on Strike
More than 50 Unite members will join three other unions on the picket lines after management refused to rule out compulsory redundancies.
On Thursday, October 15, all four campus unions at Glasgow Caledonian University will strike together for the first time, marking a historic collective action over planned job cuts.
Management attributes the restructuring to a £33 million drop in income over two years, but unions argue GCU maintains an underlying operating surplus of £12.6 million and £88.9 million in cash reserves.
While the university states 40 roles remain at risk with no compulsory redundancies yet made, leadership has refused to rule them out, prompting Unite members to join the industrial action.
Alison MacLean, Unite regional coordinating officer, claimed the joint action will force the university to "close its doors and lecture rooms," though management disputed this, stating only the library will shut.
On Monday, the Glasgow Caledonian University Students' Association passed a motion of no confidence in university principal Mairi Watson and chief financial officer Paul Queen, reflecting growing student opposition to the dispute.
