Girl, 11, 'terrified of water' drowned in hotel pool in Canaries
- On August 7 last year, Francesca Blease, an 11-year-old schoolgirl from Crewe, was found floating face down in the children's pool at the Club Jandia Princess Hotel in Fuerteventura and died the following day at a hospital in Las Palmas from severe brain hypoxia.
- Because Francesca was 'terrified' of water, she was allowed to play in the shallow children's pool during the family's first holiday abroad, visiting the pool area the day after arrival.
- Two holidaymakers, a midwife and an intensive care physiotherapist, immediately administered appropriate CPR at the poolside before emergency services arrived, though it was unclear how long she had been submerged after playing with other children for less than 10 minutes.
- The inquest concluded at Warrington Coroner's Court with HM Senior Coroner Jacqueline Devonish finding no foreseeable risk for a child in a very shallow pool and ruling the death an accident.
- Remembering her daughter, Joanne Blease, Francesca's mother, said `She had lots of friends and was very well liked by her teachers. She was never without a smile on her face` and described enduring, constant grief.
