Germany's Social Democrats to re-elect full leadership after labour minister's resignation
The party will elect its full federal leadership after Baerbel Bas resigned amid tensions with coalition partners, Lars Klingbeil said.
On Monday, German Finance Minister and Social Democratic Party co-leader Lars Klingbeil announced the party will hold a full federal conference in December or January to re-elect its entire leadership team.
Germany's labour minister and SPD co-head Baerbel Bas resigned after facing increasing "public attacks" from members of the CDU and CSU conservative bloc, the SPD's coalition partners.
Klingbeil specified, "We will hold a federal party conference, not a convention," and said "the entire SPD leadership team will stand for election there."
Emphasizing the need for unity, Klingbeil called for a "culture of mutual respect" in politics, noting that party members are "competitors" requiring "a culture of debate."
The anticipated vote reflects historical patterns of leadership turnover within the Social Democratic Party as members navigate intra-coalition friction with the CDU and CSU bloc.
The German SPD is preparing for personnel changes after the resignation of Bärbel Bas. Lars Klingbeil also appeals for a culture of respect between coalition partners and in the broader political debate.
